Calcite is a naturally occurring calcium carbonate media. The beauty of Calcite is that it limits how much it corrects. Upon contact with Calcite, acidic waters slowly dissolve the calcium carbonate to raise the pH which reduces the leaching of lead, copper and other metals found in pipes, fittings and fixtures. Periodic backwashing will prevent channeling and packing to maintain high conditioned flow rates.
Depending on pH, water chemistry and service flow, the Calcite bed will have to be periodically replenished as the Calcite is depleted.
As the Calcite’s calcium carbonate neutralizes the water, it will increase hardness and a softener is usually necessary after the neutralizing filter.
Calcite can be effectively combined with Magnesium Oxide (Corosex / Flo Mag) to deal with pH below 6.0 to 5.0 depending on flow rate.
